Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
