England along with Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
