The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
