Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
