A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
